"I strongly support the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which protects an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. Gun control is touted as a major crime-control measure. But some of the places with the strictest gun-control laws also have high violent-crime rates. Disarming law-abiding citizens does not prevent crime. The answer to violent crime is smart, effective, and aggressive law enforcement. The real effect of these gun-control measures is to place onerous restrictions on law-abiding citizens who use firearms for such legal activities as self-defense, sport-shooting, hunting, and collecting. I am committed to:
Strictly enforcing existing laws and severely punishing violent criminals.
Protecting the rights individual Americans enjoy under the Second Amendment. "

Some people think that our planet is suffering from a fever. Now scientists are telling us that Mars is experiencing its own planetary warming: Martian warming. It seems scientists have noticed recently that quite a few planets in our solar system seem to be heating up a bit, including Pluto. NASA says the Martian South Pole's "ice cap" has been shrinking for three summers in a row. Maybe Mars got its fever from earth. If so, I guess Jupiter's caught the same cold, because it's warming up too, like Pluto. This has led some people, not necessarily scientists, to wonder if Mars and Jupiter, non-signatories to the Kyoto Treaty, are actually inhabited by alien SUV-driving industrialists who run their air-conditioning at 60 degrees and refuse to recycle. Silly, I know, but I wonder what all those planets, dwarf planets, and moons in our solar system have in common. Hmm. Solar system. Hmmmm. Solar? I wonder. Nah, I guess we shouldn't even be talking about this. The science is absolutely decided. There's a consensus. Ask Galileo."

Mr. FRED THOMPSON (Republican Presidential Candidate): There are a lot of unanswered questions. We don't know to what extent this is a cyclical thing that we may or may not be able to affect very much. The extremists, I think, are the ones who want us to do drastic things to our economy before we have more answers as to how much good we can do and whether or not people in the other parts of the world are going to contribute. But it needs to be a massive federal research and development effort in order to get those answers.

The first responsibility of government is to protect the American people, the homeland, and our way of life. Today we face the urgent threat of radical Islamic terrorists. Al Qaeda is committed to attacking us here at home, and wants to use weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to kill millions. We must never give them that opportunity. We must defeat the terrorists abroad, and that begins in Iraq and Afghanistan—the central fronts in this global war. We must show the world we have the will to fight and win

Senator Thompson, all things considered, has the Bush policy toward Iraq been a good one?
THOMPSON: I think the policy we're engaged in now is the right one. Clearly, to me, we didn't go in with enough troops and we didn't know what to expect when we got there. But now we're showing signs of progress.
I think we got to take advantage of the opportunities that we have there, now that we see a window of opportunity for things to turn around and us to stabilize that place and not have to leave with our tail between our legs.

Permanently Extend the 2001 and 2003 Tax Cuts. Tax relief enacted in 2001 and 2003 has proved critical to generating a strong economy that has experienced growth despite the war on terror, the collapse in the housing market, and other economic challenges over the last six years. Unless action is taken, every American taxpayer will see a massive tax increase after December 31, 2010. Allowing this tax hike will impose an enormous financial burden on American families, slow economic growth, cost America jobs, and make it more difficult to address the country's long-term budget, economic, and security challenges. The Thompson plan ensures the following:
Reduced individual income tax rates, saving every tax-paying family a minimum of $600.
Preserving the $1000 child tax credit, which was doubled from $500 per child.
Protecting Marriage penalty relief.
Retaining Education tax incentives, including Coverdell Education Savings Accounts, 529 college savingsplans, and deductions for higher education expenses.
Reduced tax rates on capital gains and qualified dividends.
Increased expensing of investment for small businesses.

• Help build personal wealth in America by expanding the ownership of financial assets to more Americans.
• Increase retirement options for future retirees by giving them the means to decide when to retire and allowing them to build wealth that they can pass on if they so choose.

"The former Tennessee senator has not said much, if anything, about the issue, but his economic advisor Lawrence R. Lindsey said in an interview that in most cases Mr. Thompson supports regulatory action over new legislation to improve the mortgage industry.
On broker licensing, the candidate "would not want to step on states' rights to set a standard" for state-regulated entities, though having a "housekeeping seal of approval" for federally licensed brokers "probably ... makes sense," Mr. Lindsey, President Bush's chief economic adviser in his first term, said in an interview.
Mr. Thompson views bills promoted by Democrats in Congress to set national standards for suitable loans as too prescriptive.
"More effort on the regulatory front under existing rules is probably the best way to proceed," Mr. Lindsey said.
The candidate does support the Bush administration's goal of helping subprime borrowers avert foreclosure, the adviser said, but "the devil is still in the details."
Mr. Thompson "wants to see" that "operationally this is a workable solution," Mr. Lindsey said. "I think the odds are not good."
In particular, there is concern about how to identify borrowers who deserve help, Mr. Lindsey said. "It's hard to determine that objectively. Subjectively, everyone is going to say, 'I can't pay, I can't pay.' There's a real problem with that aspect of it."

Free Markets . Free people are best equipped to order their own affairs, and the common interest benefits from and is improved by the aggregate success of all. We must reform our tax system, encourage investment, support entrepreneurial spirit, open markets abroad to American goods, and minimize burdensome government regulations to continue to expand the economy and bring increased wealth to all Americans.
Limited Government . Government must be strong enough to protect us, competent enough to provide basic government services, but limited by the delineated powers in the Constitution.

Now we have to keep in mind that while the UN is hopeless in some respects, a Security Council vote provides political cover for some timid nations to do the right thing -- like help us in Iraq. Also, UN humanitarian assistance, like the World Food Program’s, run by Americans, do much good. But it’s a constant challenge at the UN, and the reason we must always have a strong ambassador there willing to blow the whistle when they do outrageous things.

Iran. Iran remains the world's premier state sponsor of terrorism, has attempted to undermine regional stability, and has repeatedly threatened Israel. Iran is intent on developing nuclear weapons, longer-range missiles, and modern conventional forces. And it is led by a tyrant who has vowed to wipe Israel off the map. Iran also supports terrorist groups throughout the Middle East, such as Hamas and Hizballah, and is responsible for supplying weapons to extremists who are killing U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. A nuclear-armed Iran will not be tolerated. Its sponsorship of terrorism must end as well. We must work with the oppressed people of Iran to bring about regime change, while also working with other responsible democracies to isolate the regime and stop its illicit activities.
The terror masters in Tehran and Damascus make only the most minor distinction between America and Israel. They say that America is the Great Satan, and Israel is the Little Satan, and both must be destroyed.

Thompson urges more military spending
GOP presidential hopeful voices support and criticism of the Iraq war
updated 10:48 a.m. ET Oct. 3, 2007
FORT DODGE, Iowa - GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson argued Tuesday for increased military spending and said soldiers fighting in Iraq need better equipment and effective leaders.
"We're going to have to spend more money for the kind of threats, the old kind and the new kind," Thompson said. "We're going to have to have a larger military, we're going to have to work closer with our allies."

Protecting Life
Fred Thompson is pro-life. He believes in the sanctity of human life and that every life is worthy of respect. He had a 100% pro-life voting record in the Senate and believes Roe v. Wade was a bad decision that ought to be overturned. He consistently opposed federal funding to promote or pay for abortion and supported the Partial Birth Abortion Act, the Child Custody Protection Act, and President Reagans Mexico City policy. While Fred Thompson supports adult stem cell research, he opposes embryonic stem cell research. He also opposes human cloning

For decades, the self-proclaimed smart kids have been telling us that the death penalty just doesn't work. The people with the top jobs in academia and the news business have scoffed at the American people's insistence that executions prevent murder.
In the last few years, however, serious researchers have applied themselves to finding the evidence. Criminologists and economists have gathered and analyzed a mountain of data, and many of them were surprised by what they found. Now, they’ve published papers in respected academic journals that are establishing an unexpected consensus.
The reliable two-thirds of Americans who have always supported the death penalty probably wouldn't be surprised to find out that study after study has shown that the death penalty deters murders. Some studies show really dramatic effects, with each execution of a murderer deterring as many as 18 or more murders.

The Rule of Law . We protect our liberty, secure our rights, and promote a just and stable society through the rule of law. We owe to ourselves and our fellow citizens our own adherence to the rules, but tough law enforcement and punishment for those who do not. A free and independent judiciary that interprets the law by adhering strictly to legal text and respects its limited role in our system of government is essential to our security and freedom, and we need judges who understand that role if we are to preserve our republic and freedom.

Act 1034, signed into law in March, reduced the mandatory time for methamphetamine-related convictions to 50 percent for inmates who be have well in prison." And in recent weeks, three candidates, Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Fred D. Thompson, have embraced some of the more controversial policies on the treatment of those suspected of supporting terrorism, backing harsh interrogation methods and refusing to rule out the use of waterboarding, a simulated drowning technique, on detainees
Their public statements came as the debate over whether waterboarding is torture had threatened to derail the nomination of Michael B. Mukasey as attorney general after he refused to call the technique illegal
Mr. Thompson has argued that there are circumstances where “you have to do what is necessary to get the information that you need.”
